Some local fishermen and vessel skippers reportedly lost contact with one another due to these adverse sea conditions.
“I’ve never seen such big waves before," Rahim Yussof, 45, an oil and gas company staff member, told Bernama today.
He had seen the waves, as high as two to four metres, lash the jetty near Labuan port.
“The waves were so high and the winds so strong that they were frightening and dreadful,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Labuan has reminded boatmen, fishermen and anglers to take extra precautions and check with the Meteorological Services Department on the weather and tide conditions.
The department today forecast strong winds and rough seas in the waters off Pahang, eastern Johor, Sarawak, Sabah (Interior, West Coast, and Kudat districts) and the Federal Territory of Labuan up to Sunday.
It said in a statement that the Category Two winds of 50 to 60kph and waves as high as 4.5 metres were dangerous for all shipping, including ferry services, fishing and coastal activities.
