The Election Commission's re-delineation maps for the Sarawak election are incomplete, electoral watchdog Bersih says.

Bersih said the maps do not detail the borders of the voting areas, thereby causing confusion.

This goes against the Schedule Thirteen, Part One, Section 2(d) of the Federal Constitution, it said.

"Why didn't they give a full map? And why was this map not displayed online as well?" Bersih spokesperson Wong Chin Huat said today.

Bersih also supported PKR’s Ba’Kelalan assemblyperson Baru Bian’s move to file a judicial review to halt the redelineation exercise if all details are not revealed, and may even move a legal challenge itself.

"It may not be the only judicial review the EC will face," Wong said.

EC: All details are there

However, when contacted, EC chairperson Abdul Aziz Yusoff ( below ) said all details are in a booklet made available where the new electoral map is displayed.

"This are six redelineation exercises and the same process has been in place. If we include all information in the maps, it will be a mess," he told Malaysiakini.

He said the same maps will also be uploaded onto the EC’s website soon.

Bersih also urged for the hearing of objections against the redelineation process in Sarawak to be made public and open to scrutiny by media and lawyers.

"The EC told political parties that each objection can only made by a maximum of three representatives without legal representation in 30 minute sessions.

"The EC should in fact encourage maximum public participation in the redelineation process and minimise malapportionment and gerrymandering," Bersih said in its statement.

A hundred lawyers

Responding to this, Abdul Aziz said lawyers can attend the hearing but they must be registered voters in the respective constituencies.

"If the group (of three) includes a lawyer, then it’s no problem. Even three lawyers are not an issue. Even if all the 100 people objecting are lawyers, it is not issue," Abdul Aziz said.
