Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, who is recuperating from an acute myocardial infarction, will be referred to the National Heart Institute (IJN) on Wednesday.

IJN heart specialist Dr Rosli Mohamed Ali said today that as Nik Aziz's condition was improving, further treatment at the IJN was not considered urgent.

So, his trip to Kuala Lumpur would be postponed to Wednesday, he told Bernama . The menteri besar was originally scheduled to leave for the IJN tomorrow.

"He is no longer in a perilous or critical condition," the specialist said.

Four specialists in attendance

Nik Aziz, 73, who had a heart attack on Thursday, was admitted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of the hospital early Friday where a coronary angioplasty and stenting was performed on him to ease his blocked arteries on the right side of his heart to prevent a relapse.

The procedure was performed by a team of four heart specialists headed by Dr Rosli who later said there was a possibility that Nik Aziz would be sent to the IJN tomorrow to enable him to receive more thorough treatment before undergoing a second coronary angioplasty to ensure that all the blood vessels in his heart were functioning well.

Today, Dr Rosli said Nik Aziz need not have to undergo a by-pass surgery but had to do exercises to enable him to fully recover and continue to be active.

Nik Aziz, who has been Kelantan Menteri Besar since 1990, was also expected to rest from work for four to six weeks, he said.

Meanwhile, USM Hospital Health Campus Director Prof Dr Mafauzy Mohamad said Nik Aziz was now able to eat and drink, and his pulse was getting stronger.
