In about two weeks, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim will know his fate when the Federal Court delivers its verdict on his final appeal against the sodomy conviction.

The Malaysian Judiciary twitter account stated that the apex court has fixed Feb 10 for its judgement.

Responding to this, Anwar tweeted, " Que sera sera (whatever will be, will be)."

To another user who hoped that the opposition leader "would be freed of slander", his response indicated that it was in the hands of God.

Anwar, 67, was previously sentenced to five years jail but the prosecution has appealed for a heavier sentence.

        

The PKR de facto leader was charged with sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan at the Desa Damansara condominium in Kuala Lumpur, between 3.15pm to 4.30pm on June 26, 2008.

A total of 27 prosecution witnesses and eight defence witnesses testified in the trial that took almost three years.

Anwar was initially acquitted by the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Jan 2012 after Justice Mohd Zabidin Mohd Diah found it unsafe to convict following the possibility of the samples retrieved from Saiful being contaminated.

However, a few days before he was scheduled to contest in the Kajang by-election last January, Anwar was unanimously found guilty by the Court of Appeal.

This paved the way for the decision to be announced by the Federal Court’s five-member bench led by Chief Justice Arifin Zakaria.

The other judges hearing the appeal and cross-appeal by the prosecution are Court of Appeal president Justice Md Raus Sharif, and Federal Court judges Abdull Hamid Embong, Suriyadi Halim Omar and Ramly Ali.

The date was also confirmed by Anwar's solicitor Ramkarpal who received a fax informing him about it this afternoon.

His late father Karpal Singh, who was killed in a road accident last April, had appeared for Anwar at the Kuala Lumpur High Court and the Court of Appeal.

This is Anwar's second sodomy charge.

In the first case, he was acquitted by the apex court in 2004 of sodomising his wife's former driver, Azizan Abu Bakar.

His sodomy charge along with accusations of abusing his power to instruct the authorities to retract several witnesses statements had led to his expulsion as deputy prime minister and Umno deputy president in 1998.

Anwar was then convicted of abuse of power and ordered to serve a nine-year jail sentence but was released after the sodomy conviction was set-aside in a controversial two to one majority decision.

In this highly charged case, Anwar surprised many when he appointed former Federal Court judge Gopal Sri Ram to lead his defence team comprising 13 other lawyers.

On the prosecution side, Umno-linked senior lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah has been appointed by Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail to lead the prosecution team.

Federal Court's Corporate Communications and International Relations division head Mohd Aizuddin Zolkeply indicated that the media would be required to register to cover the case.

Like his first case, Anwar has claimed that the second sodomy charge was also fabricated but the government has denied this.
