Nurul Izzah has urged the authorities to allow her father, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, to have tea with the king after the opening of the Parliament sitting next month.

"He must be allowed to fulfill His Highness' invitation to have tea together.

"There is a special place for the opposition leader at the ceremony," said the PKR vice-president.

Nurul also showed reporters an invitation - stating "Urusan Seri Paduka Baginda" - to Anwar from Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia to attend the Parliament sitting from March 9 to April 9.

Anwar, who is the MP for Permatang Pauh, is currently serving his five-year prison sentence after the Federal Court upheld his sodomy conviction last month.

Nurul said the invitation was sent after the Federal Court’s decision to uphold Anwar's conviction on Feb 10.        

Yesterday, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi told the media that the attorney-general is the person who can decide if the opposition leader will be able to attend Parliament.

However, Pakatan Rakyat MPs argued that the minister has the powers to decide.

Anwar's status as a lawmaker is still pending following the outcome of his family’s application for a royal pardon.

The opposition leader has always maintained that he is a victim of a political conspiracy but the government has denied this.
