PKR vice-president and Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar will spend the night at the Jinjang lock up after being arrested under the Sedition Act today.

Her remand hearing will be tomorrow morning, PKR communications chief Fahmi Fadzil said.

She turned up at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters today to give a statement on the March 7 Kita Lawan rally.

Late tonight, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said in a statement that Nurul Izzah was arrested under the Sedition Act to assist police into the investigation of the Kita Lawan rally "and for making contemptuous remarks that those in the judiciary had sold their souls to the devil".

"She will be released once her statement has been recorded," Khalid said, but did not reveal when this could be expected.

Nurul Izzah was arrested for a speech by her father and jailed Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, which she read out in Parliament.

"I have been arrested under the orders of the Bukit Aman D5 (Classified Special Unit) senior assistant director," she tweeted.

She later uploaded on Facebook a picture of her children hugging her, with the caption: "Be brave! And do your homework!"

Her lawyer Sivarasa Rasiah told reporters that Nurul Izzah was arrested under the Sedition Act for a speech made in the Dewan Rakyat last Tuesday.

"They (police) are still in the process of documentation. They have refused to divulge information if she will be remanded or not.

"The basic principle in Parliament is that MPs have immunity. Without that there shouldn't be any Parliament.

"Maybe they should just disband Parliament, and use an authoritarian regime, instead of a democratic one," Sivarasa said outside the district police headquarters.

Nurul Izzah's statement on the Kita Lawan rally was also recorded, he said.

On March 12, former Kulim Bandar Baharu MP Zulkifli Noordin lodged a report against Nurul Izzah, saying that her criticism of the judiciary was seditious and an insult to the system.

Anwar’s speech read by Nurul Izzah criticised the judges who convicted him of sodomy on Feb 10.

No statement taken

Speaking to reporters outside the police station, Nurul Izzah's sister, Nurul Nuha Anwar, condemned the action of the police in arresting Nurul Izzah under the Sedition Act.

"The police are using archaic laws to victimise her, by selective persecution. She is only doing her job as a Member of Parliament.

"The thing is, the police didn't even take down her statement. We don't know why she was remanded without police even taking down her full statement," said Nurul Nuha ( right ) amid cries of 'reformasi'.

Nurul Izzah's children, escorted by friends and family member, were seen at the police station looking confused and scared.

"Her children are devastated," Nurul Nuha said.

Nurul Izzah was seen leaving the Dang Wangi police station for the Jinjang district police headquarters in a dark-coloured Proton vehicle about 6.50pm.

Her supporters will be rallying outside the Jinjang police station at 9pm, as a sign of solidarity with her.
