A lawyer for Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar has accused the police of lying about the circumstances of her arrest.

In a press statement today, R Sivarasa said the claim of the police that Nurul Izzah would be released after her statement had been recorded implied that the police were unable to record her statement, although she came to police station voluntarily yesterday afternoon.

" That impression Khalid attempts to give is false and totally unbecoming of the head of the police force," said Sivarasa.

Sivarasa explained that his client was at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters at 2pm yesterday to have two statements recorded - one in relation to the Feb 14 Kita Lawan rally, and another on her speech in Parliament on Feb 11.

The second matter was handled by one ASP Muniandy from Bukit Aman. Sivarasa said he spoke to Muniandy who relayed that he would record Nurul Izzah's statement after the first statement was recorded.

However, after Nurul Izzah was done with giving her statement on the Kita Lawan rally at 3pm, Muniandy informed Sivarasa that he was under instructions to arrest her and then record her statement.

"When I asked if she would be released after that, he refused to commit himself, saying he would have to get instructions from his superiors in Bukit Aman," Sivarasa ( left ) said.

According to Sivarasa, the arrest documentation process was completed at 5pm, following which Muniandy said he received fresh instructions to remand Nurul Izzah and that the police would seek further remand the next morning.

"All of us who were present at the police station yesterday knew fully well that Nurul Izzah's statement could have easily have been recorded by yesterday afternoon. We were ready to commence it at 3pm yesterday.

"Khalid Abu Bakar should resign for his shameless lies to the public to attempt to justify his instructions to his officers to remand Nurul Izzah overnight in the Jinjang station lock-up, a remand that was totally unnecessary.

"Khalid should know that it is obvious to all and sundry that his detention of Nurul Izzah has Umno's political fingerprints all over it. Unintelligent lies will not make that impression go away," Sivarasa added.
