Voting on the Private Member's Bill on hudud, if presented to Parliament may go "according to the conscience" of the lawmakers on the BN side, with no specific directive given to them, says BN Backbenchers Club chairperson Shahrir Samad.

"My feeling is that it will probably be a conscience vote. No directive has been given on how you should vote (if such a bill is tabled)," Shahrir told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

The Johor Bahru MP also said that matters involving religion should be decided by a vote of conscience.

"I cannot imagine BN saying - you are BN, so you must support (the bill) even though you are non-Muslim," he said.

"It is most appropriate if it is a conscience vote. MPs should be allowed to exercise and act according to their conscience," the veteran lawmaker added.

Shahir went on to stress that there is no link between the hudud issue and greater cooperation between Umno and PAS.

The PAS-led Kelantan state government today went ahead and tabled amendments to its Syariah Criminal Code 1993 Enactment, despite objections from its Pakatan Rakyat allies DAP and PKR.

DAP will deliberate its next course following the tabling of the bill at its executive committee meeting on Monday.
