DAP today for the first time publicly targeted PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang for what it said is an act of “serial treachery” by the top leader.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the problem faced by Pakatan Rakyat has gone beyond Kelantan PAS’ insistence to push for hudud but also Abdul Hadi’s inability to keep his promises.

“The issue facing the Pakatan leadership council is no longer just PAS’ stubborn insistence to trust and cooperate with Umno to implement hudud laws but also their president’s utter contempt for Pakatan by repeatedly breaking his own promises to Pakatan issued personally.

“Such serial acts of treachery by the PAS top leader is untenable and is a deliberate act of provocation to break up Pakatan or threaten DAP and PKR to either submit to PAS or face a break-up of Pakatan,” Lim said in a statement today.

Lim’s remarks came after it was revealed that Abdul Hadi ( left ) had submitted a notice to table a private member’s bill in Parliament to push for hudud behind the coalition’s back.

“Hadi had served notice to Parliament on March 18, to implement hudud on Muslims in Kelantan by amending Act 355, which is the Shariah Court’s (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965. The hudud laws in Kelantan was only passed unanimously by the Kelantan state assembly on March 19.

“By serving notice even before the bill was passed shows that Hadi has again broken his promise made personally by him during the Feb 8 meeting that any attempt to move a private member’s bill would be first discussed by the Pakatan leadership council,” said Lim.

Hadi's incessant violations

In the strongly-worded statement, Lim called Hadi’s move as “a further act of treachery by PAS” which breached the Pakatan leadership council decision on Feb 8, the last meeting chaired by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim before he was jailed.

“Such an approach by Hadi of either it is my way or the highway, cannot be part of and violates the consensus approach adopted by Pakatan towards a healthy democratic and functional coalition,” said Lim, who is also Penang chief minister.

Meanwhile, DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang also took aim at Hadi, saying that the leader had chalked up a long list of violations against Pakatan since its inception in 2008.

“Hadi’s submission of a private member’s bill on hudud implementation had come as a total surprise not only to DAP and PKR leaders and MPs, but to the majority of PAS leaders and MPs as well,” he said.

Kit Siang also lamented that Hadi had reverted to playing truant at the Pakatan leadership council meeting after attending only one meeting shortly before Anwar was jailed.

“Hadi also did not attend the March 12 Pakatan leadership council meeting, although it was scheduled specially so that he could be able to attend - but he subsequently claimed that he had not been informed that there was such a meeting,” said Kit Siang.
