Only better policing, not hudud, can stop crime

YOURSAY ‘I suppose Isma thinks conservative clothing prevents rape as well?’

Hudud could have prevented robbery, Isma tells Yeoh

Commentable: Isma president Abdullah Zaik Abd Rahman, where did you get that idea from (that hudud can prevent robbery)? Have you got any established authorities to back up your hypothesis or are you just shooting blanks?

To counter your argument, how do you explain why people are still smuggling drugs despite the death penalty or bank robbers still going out to commit robberies despite the risk of getting shot by the police?

So going by this analogy, if you have hudud, do you think risking a limb or two will be sufficient deterrence?

TehTarik: What are we waiting for? We should introduce hudud as soon as possible as this will cut crime and the streets will be safe again. No more robberies or snatch thieves. No more drug addicts. No more driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI).

The police can be completely withdrawn from the streets so that they can concentrate on internal security and the arrests of traitors.

Some say that there is almost zero crime in the Gulf states and Saudi Arabia. Shops openly display gold and there are no security guards. We will once again become a peaceful, safe and pious nation.

HeWhoGivethTaketh: Indeed, punishment for drug trafficking is death. Do you see people stop trafficking drugs? So what makes you think people will stop robbing? Stupid, aren't you?

Crimes such as robberies happen when there is a vast disparity of wealth and the majority earns low income.

Citizen No.26: Emulate Singapore, Taiwan and Japan where crime rates are very low due to excellent police work.

The greatest concern here is can hudud prevents a miscarriage of justice. Will these extremists think before they utter nonsense?

AntiRacial: Singapore has not implemented hudud but they have lowest crime rate and corruption.

The civil law can do it if the enforcement officers and the authorities are not sleeping on their job. It is an issue of enforcement, not the law.

Diablo: Can hudud prevent corruption? Stealing of public funds? Abuse of power? Selective prosecution?

WDA: Isma, are you saying that crime rate will be zero if hudud is implemented? No one will get robbed? Of course not!

Crime will continue to happen irrespective of the law because the perpetrators can get away with it due to poor enforcement.

Smuggling drugs is punished by hanging until death under the current law but that does not deter some people from attempting to do so because the potential reward outweighs the risk.

Isma, your credibility and self-respect takes a steep dive every time you open your mouth. So, please zip up before you make further fools of yourselves.

Kalvin Rekhraj: Does Abdullah know who the robbers are? The only reason I ask is because the proposed law can only be meted out on Muslims.

In addition to that, the criminals must be caught before being sentenced, and the way the police force is going I am almost certain these criminals will never get caught.

There is no study to prove that the proposed hudud law deters crime and the one point that the proponents of hudud tend to ignore is the fact that Malaysia is a secular nation.

Anonymous_1403851580: The robbers also practice hudud - they chop arm and legs, yet people are not frightened to accumulate wealth.

They live in big houses and drive big cars. Obviously, they are not deterred by the ‘hudud’ robbers. Likewise, how sure are you that hudud will prevent robberies?

Wong Lu Shin: This man is talking nonsense again. Many studies have shown that harsh punishments are not a deterrent to crime.

Just do a Google search of "capital punishment does not reduce crime" and you will find dozens of documents on this matter.

Thianaik Tan: Why not argue that by improving our economy and wiping out poverty, there will be no robbery?

Nobody is born a robber. Which is more important is to address the root causes of robbery.

Middle Path: And why not use Islam to instill more faith and a sense of right or wrong? That would really reduce crime.

If our leaders continue to steal from the rakyat and the police force is focused on arresting dissidents rather than fighting crime, what are we to expect?

Well Thats Fantastic: I suppose Abdullah thinks conservative clothing prevents rape as well? How dumb can a person be? How is he the leader of anything?

Smer: Stiffer punishment doesn't matter if they don't get caught. Remember our police chief has assigned 100 percent of the workforce to monitor online media for sedition, 24/7.

Who's going catch the robbers even if hudud is implemented?
