PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu is the latest victim of a police dragnet following the May Day rally against the goods and services tax.

According to Mohamad, he voluntarily went to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters at 11.30am today, after police asked him to turn up for questioning.

"I was then arrested at noon and told I was to be investigated under the Sedition Act 1948. I don't know what I did wrong.

"Now I'm waiting to have my statements recorded," said Mohamad, the leader of the anti-GST coalition of NGOs that organised the May Day protest and who is better known as Mat Sabu.

He said police had requested for him to have his statement recorded two days ago, but he was about to board a plane at the time.

"I told them I will appear at the police station after I come back," he said.

Speaking to Malaysiakini after he was released at 5.45pm, Mohamad said he was probed under the Sedition Act 1948 and chose not to reply to any of the questions posed.

36 people held so far

Dang Wangi district police chief Zainol Samah confirmed the arrest.

Asked what laws would be applied to conduct theinvestigations against Mohamad, Zainol replied: "Same like the others".

Thus far, 36 people have been arrested in connection to the rally, including former Bar Council preident Ambiga Sreenevasan, PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli, PKR vice-president Tian Chua and DAP organising secretary Anthony Loke.

They were released after being held overnight.

However, 23 individuals are still being held.

Among others, the detainees are being investigated for flouting illegal assembly laws, sedition, vandalism and violating provisions under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
