PAS has joined DAP in backing the appointment of PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as Parliamentary opposition leader, said PAS vice-president Mahfuz Omar.

According to to Harakah Daily , Mahfuz said PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had agreed to the matter during the party's last central committee meeting.

"Since DAP has made a stand on the matter, we will agree with it," he was quoted as saying.

According to Mahfuz, Abdul Hadi had initially suggested that DAP should lead the opposition bloc, by virtue of the party having the highest number of seats in the Dewan Rakyat among Pakatan Rakyat parties.

DAP has 37 MPs while PKR has 29. PAS has 21 MPs.

Previously, Abdul Hadi had objected to PKR's decision to nominate Wan Azizah for Selangor menteri besar.

Following this, Abdul Hadi also refused to publicly support Wan Azizah's candidacy for the Permatang Pauh by-election.

Wan Azizah eventually went on to win the by-election convincingly, despite some elements within PAS boycotting her campaign.

She was named opposition leader between March and July 2008, before she quit resigned as an MP to force a by-election, allowing her husband Anwar Ibrahim to takeover.
