Responding to DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang’s challenge to the prime minister to seek a vote of confidence, Kota Belud MP Abdul Rahman Dahlan asks if Lim would resign if the motion wins.

“Suppose (the prime minister) wins the motion of confidence in Parliament. Will Kit Siang resign from DAP and retire from politics forever and ever?” he said in a Twitter posting this morning.

He was referring to Lim’s press statement on Tuesday challenging Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to table a motion of confidence on his leadership.

This follows the precedent of Malaysian’s third prime minister Hussein Onn in 1976, when he took over the reins from his predecessor Abdul Razak Hussein following the latter’s death.

Lim said this is for Najib to prove that he still enjoys the support of most of the MPs, especially following several public shows of support for him from the party.

“Is Najib bold enough to seek such a vote of confidence from Parliament on Monday or he is fearful that an accident might occur and he might lose a vote of confidence on Monday and suddenly cease to be prime minister?” Lim ( left ) said.

In a string of tweets, however, Abdul Rahman said Lim’s suggestion is ‘ridiculous’.

“I can't believe (Lim) is pushing BN MPs to move ‘vote of confidence’ motion on PM's leadership. This is the ridiculous.

“By doing this, Kit Siang unwittingly admitting that the opposition is in a disarray and fractured in parliament.

“Kit Siang asking other people to fight for him. That's very ‘un-kitsiang’. This man used to fight his own war. Has he lost it?” he tweeted.

Lim became DAP’s secretary-general in 1969 and had served in various top positions in the party in the 46 years since. He is now its parliamentary leader.

His long career had occasionally drew jibes from his political opponents, who point out that their own parties have changed leaders several times and that even the long-serving fourth prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has retired.
