The 500 top salary earners in Malaysian Airlines should have their pay trimmed ahead of plans to terminate thousands of lower-ranking staff, said the National Union of Flight Attendants Malaysia (Nufam).

In a press release today, Nufam said the top salary earners could "easily feed" thousands of families, who depend on their breadwinners in MAS, which pays below average compared to other airlines in this region.

"So where is the logic that the lower ranking staff are overpaid and deserve to be terminated for what is happening in MAS today?" said Nufam.

Nufam said the lower -ranking staff are not at fault for the bad decisions made by MAS officials and should not be made to pay with their jobs.

"Nufam condemns the manner  in which the national airline was operated previously under unnecessary and aggressive spending resulting in huge losses today.

"Today, it is clear that they even continue to hire and pay individuals or companies which they claimed are specialists in reviving the airlines again.

"What guarantee will MAS give to the public with regards to the airline's survival and profits in the next few years? How certain is it that we won't see MAS suffering more loses again?" asked the union.

Termination letters to be sent

According to The Star , all 20,000 MAS staff will be terminated in view of the migration from MAS to MAS Bhd which begins operating from Sept 1.

The axed staff will either receive termination letters or re-employment letters with new conditions.

Quoting sources, The Star said up to 8,000 people will not be re-employed .

The restructuring exercise was undertaken following the appointment of Christoph Mueller as MAS CEO.

Khazanah Nasional Bhd, the national sovereign wealth fund, owns 100 percent of MAS.
