Four concerned citizens have filed in the Kuala Lumpur High Court last Thursday to challenge the Private Member’s Bill tabled in Parliament by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang as unconstitutional.

 

With this, the four - Mansoor Saat, Azira Aziz, Hasbeemaputra Abu Bakar and Hazwany Jamaluddin - also seek an injunction to stop the Dewan Rakyat from debating the private member’s bill.

 

They have named Hadi, speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia, deputy speakers Ismail Mohamed Said and Ronald Kiandee, and parliamentary secretary Rosmee Hamzah as defendants.

 

The court has set June 12 for case management for the injunction, and June 18 for the hearing regarding the unconstitutional aspects of the bill, said the quartet’s lawyer Siti Kassim.

 

They have served a copy of the notice to the speaker's office.

Hadi's controversial bill is seeking to enhance the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965.

 

Despite PAS' denial, the bill is viewed as a move by Kelantan government to implement its hudud enactment passed at state level earlier this year.
