An Umno supreme council member has called on the special task force to expedite its probe concerning allegation-riddled firm 1MDB and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak

"I personally think the whole investigation must be expedited at all costs.

"We are playing with people's trust and sentiments right now. My worry is that the rakyat will laugh at the way we are handling things," Reezal Merican Naina Merican told Malaysiakini .

On the same note, he is concerned on how those involved in pursuing the truth are being demonised on a daily basis.

"The attorney-general is under attack, police chief, Bank Negara governor... who is next?

"What are we trying to do here? Are we trying to completely debunk the whole process and procedure?" he asked.

The special task force comprises personnel from the police, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and Bank Negara.

Given that the head of these agencies report to Najib in his capacity as prime minister or finance minister, aspersion has been cast on the task force's independence.

Meanwhile, Reezal also argued that conspiracy theories surrounding this issue should be put on hold as discovering the truth was of paramount importance.

Don't go off-tangent

"The focus here is all the contentious issues at hand must be resolved first and as such the conspiracy, in whatever form, would be unfolded as well.

"We must not go off-tangent with our main objectives; be it 1MDB or any other related issues. Conspiracy theories can wait for now.

"The rakyat deserves to know the truth," he stressed.

Reezal was responding to claims of a conspiracy to oust Najib. The latter himself has blamed former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad of masterminding his exit.

However, Mahathir said calls for the prime minister to resign are made openly and hence there is no cloak-and-dagger plot at work.
