The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has denied its senior officers are involved in a plot to topple the government.

Responding to statements published in blogs, MACC described the allegation as false and baseless.

However, it did not mention these blogs.

"The action taken by MACC senior officers is clearly to exercise their duties, and upon the orders and knowledge of MACC chairperson Abu Kassim Mohamed ( photo )," said the commission in a media statement.

"The responsibility of MACC is to investigate cases concerning corruption and not to topple any quarter, including the government," it added.

As an independent commission, MACC said its responsibility is to carry out investigations in an independent, transparent, and fair manner, without fear or favour, irrespective of who is involved.

"MACC will not allow any quarters to influence or intervene in ongoing investigations," it added.

Following the removal of Abdul Gani Patail as attorney-general and the cabinet reshuffle this week, speculations surfaced that it was designed to derail the probes into 1MDB, which included the one being carried out by the special task force.

Since then, allegations have surfaced that some personalities on the task force are involved in a plot to topple the government.

Among the names were Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz and MACC deputy commissioner Mohd Shukri Abdul.
