Gerakan Harapan Baru (GHB) will support Bersih 4.0 peaceful rally scheduled to be held on Aug 29 and 30 and has urged all its members and progressive politicians to join other citizens at the protest.

GHB chairperson Mohamad Sabu said the right to peaceful assembly is a constitutional right and the people should turn up in numbers as the country is in shambles.

"The economy is at its worst where the national debt for 2015 is RM847.9 billion, making up 63.8 percent of the Gross Domestic Product. There is growing household debt, people are faced with the burden of GST, and no transparency in the administration of the government.

"Meanwhile, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has not denied the US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) was deposited in his personal accounts and he had failed in his task as the PM. He should be responsible for all the problems facing the country," Mat Sabu said in a statement.

He added that the mammoth peaceful assembly is for all citizens to gather, pressure Najib to resign, and to form a transition government until free and clean elections are called in order to save Malaysia from destruction.

"We will support Bersih's efforts and would give our full cooperation in participating in the rally," he said.

PAS open to taking part in rally

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the party is open to taking part in the rally, but it first wants to discuss the details of the event with the organiser.

"We are open, we can talk with anybody. However, we only know about the rally from media reports,” he said yesterday.

Takiyuddin ( photo ) said this when asked whether PAS would take part the rally, just as the Islamic party had done in the previous three mammoth Bersih rallies.

Bersih has plans to hold the overnight rallies in three cities - Kuala Lumpur, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu to push for Prime Minister Najib Razak to step down over the 1MDB controversy.

In a press conference on Tuesday, 17 leaders of DAP, PKR and GHB warned Najib that if the government clamped down on 1MDB critics, they would make sure hundreds of thousands of protesters take to the streets.

Meanwhile, Takiyuddin, who is also the MP for Kota Baru, said the party lawmakers would cast votes of no confidence against Najib, if anyone moots such a motion in Parliament.

"Votes of no confidence are part of the democratic process. PAS will support this," he declared.

Even if the opposition opts for a different approach outside the parliamentary process, he said, citing the Perak crisis and the Selangor crisis, PAS would be interested in taking part.

"As long as you don't resort to toppling the government with force, but opt for a democratic way, we will support," Takiyuddin said.

However, he added, the opposition needed to discuss this issue frankly and openly.
