'Where's Paul Low when MACC officials arrested?'

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Paul Low has been criticised for his "impotence" when key officials of the special task force investigating 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) had come under assault.

DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang, in a statement today, pointed out how Low had vowed to protect the officers of the special task force and had said that he had been brought into the cabinet to strengthen transparency and accountability in the government.

"Tragically, Low was completely impotent when the key officials and the multi-agencies of the special task force investigating 1MDB  came under assault," he said.

Lim's remarks came after the replacement of former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail ( photo ), and the arrest of a former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) adviser and an officer from the Attorney-General's Chambers by the police.

"Was Low consulted? Was he aware that Gani was to be summarily sacked and what did he do to stop such wanton disregard of the principles of good governance?

"Was Low aware of the two arrests (which happened yesterday and) today? What did Low do when the table was turned and the hunters became the hunted as the special task force was displaced by a police probe on the 1MDB task force?" queried Lim, who urged Low to speak up on his position as minister tasked on governance, integrity and human rights.

Arrested last night, the MACC duo are being investigated under Section 124 of the Penal Code for "activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy".

'Explain the charge sheet'

On another matter, Lim asked whether Abdul Gani was a free man or otherwise as he has yet to explain the truth on the purported draft of a charge sheet against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Pointing out that Abdul Gani was to continue serving as judicial and legal service officer until his mandatory retirement on Oct 6, Lim asked what is in the way of newly-minted Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali appearing with Abdul Gani to explain the truth on the matter.

"(This is) unless Gani is not prepared to appear in public to make such a statement or Gani is no more a free man to make such a public appearance," he said.

In a shocking twist, Apandi was announced on Tuesday as replacement for Abdul Gani as attorney-general.

Abdul Gani, when contacted by the media had appeared surprised by the news which quoted his retirement as linked to "health reasons".
