Road users Penang, especially in Bayan Lepas and Bayan Baru, were caught in a traffic gridlock today following the closure of a section of the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway to build a multilevel bridge.

The three-hour-long congestion in the morning caused people to be late for work and school and there were also complaints of people missing flights.

Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin, in a WhatsApp message to the media, said he had received numerous complaints about the traffic jam, especially from Penang Bridge users going to work in the Free Industrial Zone in Bayan Lepas.

A section of the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway between the junction of Sungai Keluang 1 and the Kampung Jawa Highway will be closed for five months from last Saturday to build a multilevel bridge across Sungai Keluang to link the Bayan Lepas Expressway to the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge.

Following the closure, road users to and from Penang Bridge to the airport at Bayan Lepas are advised to use Jalan Tun Dr Awang while vehicles from the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge to the airport and George Town and vice-versa are advised to use Jalan Permatang Damar Laut.
