Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah today said police are spinning the truth about the NGO's application for the Bersih 4 rally to be held on Aug 29 and 30.

"I feel that they (the police) are being very unfair and they didn't tell the truth," she said when contacted by Malaysiakini today.

Earlier today, Kuala Lumpur police chief Tajuddin Mohd Isa claimed the Bersih 4 rally organiser had not yet completed all the documents required for the police to approve their application.

"They can submit the documents any time before the rally date and only after that will we consider their application (to hold the rally)," he told Bernama.

Maria Chin ( photo ), however, said that police had refused to accept their submission of the application forms along with a letter of notice to the police on Tuesday.

"They refused to take the form and the notice letter. Refused to even acknowledge them. They didn't even want to stamp the documents," she said.

Asked if they were given a reason for the documents to be refused, she said they were not.

She also pointed out that they were no longer holding the rally at Dataran Merdeka and instead it would be held within the vicinity of the landmark.

'Very disappointing'

She said this was something they had already discussed with the Kuala Lumpur Mayor Mohd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz when they met him yesterday morning.

The police were present at this meeting, Maria said, adding that they should already be aware that the rally is no longer going to be held at Dataran Merdeka.

"It's very disappointing that they (the police) now turn the story around," she lamented.

Lawyer Syahredzan Johan ( photo ) also noted in a series of tweets today that an assembly held without notice is not actually illegal.

"(Non-notification) is just a civic obligation. And I do believe Bersih has notified (the police).

"To use non-notification as a reason to stop the assembly would amount to a denial of the protesters right to peaceful assembly under the constitution," he tweeted.
