Eighteen arterial roads leading to Dataran Merdeka this weekend will be blocked ahead of the Merdeka Day parade and Bersih 4 rally.

According to the Kuala Lumpur traffic police Mohd Nadzri Hussain, the road closures will begin on Wednesday to facilitate the preparations for the Merdeka Day parade next Monday.

The routes will be closed at 6am daily and are expected to be reopened in stages by noon each day.

"Only those who will be on duty on National Day are allowed to enter Dataran Merdeka through Bulatan Dato Onn - Jalan Gereja and park their vehicles in the underground parking lot.

"They need the necessary car stickers to enter Dataran Merdeka," said Mohad Nadzri, according to Star Online .

The road closures are likely to affect the Bersih 4 rally which will kick off at 2pm on Saturday and aims to gather in areas surrounding Dataran Merdeka for 34 hours.

This means that the rally will be affected for approximately six hours on Sunday due to the road closures.

Organisers said that rally was aimed at demanding Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's resignation and several key institutional reforms.
