The 17 students and activists arrested by police yesterday for protesting outside Parliament have been remanded for three days.

They will be held at the Jinjang police detention centre.

Bar Council president Steven Thiru, who is acting as an observer, said they are being investigated under Section 124B of the Penal Code or activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.

Thiru ( centre in photo ) said those remanded were also being investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

He said the authorities had asked the students to be remanded for a week but the magistrate only granted three days.

Thiru said lawyers for the detainees will apply for a review at the High Court because the lawyers are of the opinion that the police has misintepreted Section 124B of the Penal Code.

"The police did not provide any evidence that there was violence... They also could not prove that the detainees acted against the Federal Constitution," he said.

The students had camped outside Parliament for more than a day, demanding a thorough investigation into the RM2.6 billion deposited into Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's personal bank accounts.

Police ordered the students to disperse last night and arrested them when they refused to disperse.
