Continuing his salvo against the prime minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad has warned that several more billions will be "obtained illegally" to fund the next general election.
This, the former premier said, is because under Najib Abdul Razak an astronomical sum of RM2.6 billion was needed for the last general election.
"If Najib won (the last general election) through bribery, he will need more money to keep himself in power and for the 14th general election.
"Where will the billions more come if not illegally? Malaysia will be ruled by a prime minister who is reliant on corruption.
"Najib said 'cash is king', this is the king which Najib worships," he lashed out in a blog posting today.
Mahathir was referring to the RM2.6 billion deposited into Najib's personal bank accounts.
The prime minister denied taking public funds for personal gain while his supporters claim it was "political donation" for the general election from a Middle Eastern source.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) also confirmed it was donation but is still investigating the matter.
However, Mahathir rubbished this explanation.
"There was never any explanation as to who the donor was, where the source of the wealth came from, the banks involved and other details.
"This claim (that the money was a donation) does not make sense," he said.
Mahathir reiterated that the general election would not require such a large sum.
"If it is for the party to buy nasi lemak or drinks or to rent cars like in the past, this sum (RM2.6 billion) is several hundred times more than what is needed.
"But if it is to bribe leaders and MPs with millions each, if it is to bribe officers to cheat, then there is a good likelihood that RM2.6 billion is needed," he said.
