Bersih should wait before spending the millions collected, Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Abdul Rahman Dahlan said.

This is because the Umno minister wants to send the electoral reform NGO a "bill" on the cost of cleaning the area where the Bersih rally was held in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 29 and 30.

"The cost is around RM65,000, and that is for Kuala Lumpur only.

"So I hope Maria does not spend the RM1.5 million first," he said in a press conference in Serdang today.

He was referring to Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah.

Bersih raised more than RM2 million in donations and sales of T-shirts prior to the rally which attracted 100,000 people.

Abdul Rahman said the bill would be sent as soon as possible as early as this week.

"This does not include the damages they have made. I leave it to the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to give them the bill.

"It's for urinating all over the place; at trees, behind buildings, under staircases, in the ditches. We will bill all these to Bersih," he said.

Peaceful rally

Kuala Lumpur Mayor Mohd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz had confirmed with The Malay Mail Online yesterday that the Bersih rally did not cause any infrastructural damage.

He, however, said that the costs incurred so far were for cleaning works and that DBKL will claim this from the rally organisers.

The rally, which was held for 34 hours, saw tens of thousands of people gather near the vicinity of Dataran Merdeka.

Despite threats of arrests after the rally was declared illegal by the authorities, the rally ended peacefully without major disturbances.
