Football Association of Malaysia president Tengku Abdullah Ahmad Shah said he will resign from his post if the Harimau Malaya squad's performance worsens, The New Straits Times reported.

This follows the team's humiliating 10-0 defeat to the United Arab Emirates in the 2018 World Cup and 2019 Asia Cup Qualifying Round last week.

"If we fail in qualifications, I will withdraw honourably and I will do that in stages," he told reporters here.

He would propose FAM appoint his deputy Afandi Hamzah as acting president to prepare the national squad until 2023, the daily reported.

The Pahang crown prince was elected FAM president last year. He succeeded his father Sultan Ahmad Shah, who was FAM president for 20 years.

National squad coach Dollah Salleh on Friday resigned over the stunning defeat.

It was the worst the national team has ever suffered in an international match, prompting Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin to mull suspending FAM .
