A friend of missing deputy public prosecutor Anthony Kevin Morais has described him as a gem of a person, willing to extend help to anyone.

Mohamed Asharat Ramzan Ali said he and his sister know Morais as they all hailed from Ipoh, Perak.

“Morais went to the same school as my sister and we know him very well. He is very well liked and soft-spoken.

“He is always willing to help others. That is why we are puzzled and concerned that he is missing,” said Asharat to Malaysiakini .

He suspects the disappearance of Morais could be related to a big case he is working on.

Morais who is the deputy head of the trial and appeals division of the Attorney General Chambers, since July 1, last year, was reported missing on Friday after leaving his condominium at Menara Duta, Kuala Lumpur in his government-issued vehicle with the number plate WA 6264 Q.

He was previously the deputy head of prosecution with the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission.

A senior DPP also told Malaysiakini that he had last seen Morais on Thursday, and he looked fine.

“We are extremely concerned over his safety,” said the senior DPP, when met recently.

Attorney General Mohamad Apandi Ali ( photo ) however refuted claims that Morais was involved in the 1MDB investigations, and said the DPP is handling cases which he brought along with him, for purposes of continuity of prosecution.

Among the cases that Morais is working on for trial is one involving former Sime Darby chief executive officer Ahmad Zubair @ Ahmad Zubir Murshid for criminal breach of trust .

A burnt car resembling the one Morais used was found at an oil palm plantation in Kampung Sungai Samak in Hilir Perak last Friday.However no body was found.

Hilir Perak Police chief ACP Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said police would need at least a week to conduct the investigation and find out who had owned the car, as the markings on the vehicle's chassis number could not be traced.

Stop rumours, says IGP

Inspector-General of Police, Khalid Abu Bakar had called for a stop to rumours surrounding Morais disappearance, where a Twitter account belonging to @raishussin, wrote: "DPP Kevin Morais who was in charge of 1MDB investigation is now missing and his car was found burnt (at Hutan Melintang)."

Meanwhile Kuala Lumpur CID chief, Zainuddin Ahmad, who is leading a task force in search of Morais, today denied that his body was found in Klang, Selangor.

Zainuddin told Bernama that ‎such reports spreading in Facebook and social media are untrue.

He however decline to elaborate further on the matter.

Yesterday, it was reported that AmBank founder Hussain Ahmad Najadi's son Pascal ( photo ) was also concerned that Morais' disappearance could be linked to the assassination of his father.

"We are concerned there might be a link and we demand this gets not only reported in the media to alert the general public but to also call on the attorney-general and IGP to start investigating any possible links to the Hussain Najadi assassination," a statement on behalf of Pascal had said.

Deputy IGP Noor Rashid Ibrahim yesterday said police have ruled out the possibility that Morais was kidnapped, as family and close friends have not received any ransom demands.
