While DAP and PKR are bickering over whether PAS should be included in the new opposition pact, Parti Amanah Negara vice-chairperson Mujahid Yusof Rawa said all parties hoping to be in the new set-up must first agree to abide by mutual principles.

He said these principles include matters pertaining to race and religion, social and economic justice and anti-corruption measures.

"We have to be clear about our stand and understanding when it comes to issues such as local government elections and hudud law which affects the entire nation," Mujahid told Malaysiakini.

"Most importantly, we will take a firm and principled stand against corruption and cronyism," he added.

Mujahid said the new opposition pact will not take a soft stance on the two matters and will continue to seek answers to the allegations involving the debt-ridden 1MDB.

He said the coalition must continue to urge Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to come clean about the RM2.6 billion 'donation' deposited in his private bank account before the 2013 national polls.

"We must also be very clear that Umno and BN is our main and common enemy," Mujahid said.

"Is PAS willing to agree to these principles?" he queried.

Mujahid said PAS itself are divided in their views about race, religion and corruption.

He added that often PAS leaders appear to be not on the same page with their president Abdul Hadi Awang.

DAP 'no', PKR 'yes'

This was evident, he noted, on PAS leaders' ambigious stand on their members participating in the Bersih anti-Najib rally on Aug 29 and 30 and in the coming 'red shirt' pro-Umno gathering in support of the PM.

"Can PAS be united in a new coalition when the party itself is split?" Mujahid asked.

"These questions need to be answered before a new opposition pact becomes a reality," he said.

Under Hadi's leadership, PAS and Umno are seen as being open to the idea of a 'unity government'.

Since PAS has cut ties with DAP and has expressed its intention to contest seats dominated by DAP, the party says it cannot accept PAS in a new coalition.

PKR, however, is open to PAS joining the new pact although Hadi has rejected the idea.
