Hadi: If a leader turns thief, people will turn robbers
A leader who becomes a thief sets an example for his followers to do the same, said PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang
Hadi lamented although Malaysia is a resource rich nation, it is facing serious economic issues such as the ringgit's depreciation and inflation.
"According to Islamic teaching, the economy should be fair and just to all, neither to victimise the rich nor burden the poor.
"If a leader becomes a thief, the people would become robbers," he said at the Kongres Rakyat rally in Selangor today.
The Marang MP added that the government needs to be careful because it is under heavy scrutiny by the people.
He said leaders have a responsibilty to set a good example.
"Leaders are not there to seek opportunities for themselves, but to fulfill obligations," he said.
He also urged against "fanaticism" and "chauvinism" which he said is un-Islamic.
"There is no place for fanatics, chauvinists, opportunists, nor extremists in Islam," he said.
While he does not mention names, his call comes as Umno-linked quarters plan to organise a rally to defend "Malay dignity" on Sept 16.
This is in response to what they claim to be insults hurled at Malay leaders at the Bersih 4 rally on Aug 29 and 30.
Umno secretary-general and Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Mansor said the Kuala Lumpur City Hall will not allow a march.
Umno reportedly confirmed that the party headquarters sent a letter to state Umno executive secretaries for preparation of the 'Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu' last week, if invited. .
