Several Umno grassroots leaders who took part in a protest against a church in Taman Medan, Selangor on April 19 have been let off the hook with a warning issued by their party.

Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the party would not take disciplinary action against them as it was satisfied with their explanations.

"They already explained. I think they amicably spotted the problem themselves," he told Malaysiakini .

"We accept their explanation," said Tengku Adnan, who is also federal territories minister.

"The issue has been sorted out, it's okay. No disciplinary (action)," he repreated.

On April 19, some 50 people turned up outside the shoplot which houses the Community of Praise Petaling Church demanding that the church remove the cross outside its premises which it did.

Several of the protesters were Umno members, including Taman Lindungan Jaya branch leaders Abdullah Abu Bakar and Munaliza Hamzah.

Did not condone

On April 24, Tengku Adnan said the party would take action against any member involved in the church protest if they were found them to have broken any law.

He said action would be taken against them once the police concluded their investigations into the case under the Sedition Act 1948.

He also claimed that Umno did not condone the protest which drew widespread condemnation from various quarters, including BN leaders.

"Umno is not involved at all […] they can be members of Umno but Umno did not ask them to do that.

"We are very upset. We have told them this shouldn't happen. It is unbecoming because we live in society that is multi-ethnic and multi-religious,” said Tengku Adnan.
