Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor branded Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin as "arrogant" for not being receptive to party president Najib Abdul Razak's winding-up speech.

"That is the problem, (Muhyiddin is) arrogant, what can you do?" said Tengku Adnan after the conclusion of the five-day Umno general assembly this evening at the PWTC in Kuala Lumpur.

He was responding to a question on what he thought of Muhyiddin not rising with his party colleagues when Najib delivered his spirited winding-up speech.

However, multiple sources within the assembly hall told Malaysiakin i that Muhyiddin did indeed stand up together with his colleagues when Najib declared himself to be “magnanimous" towards his opponents.

The sources said Muhyiddin, however, only stood up briefly and then sat down again while his other colleagues remained standing and gave Najib a standing ovation.

Muhyiddin was later asked about this but was coy on the matter.

"That is not important […] talking about whether I stood up or not," he said.

Muhyiddin was seen stone-faced during Najib's speech but managed a smile when he shook Najib's hand at the end.

The handshake appeared awkward with Najib only grasping Muhyiddin's fingers with both his hands.

Nevertheless, not all Umno leaders viewed Muhyiddin's awkward reaction negatively.

'Light at end of tunnel'

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said it was a step in the right direction towards ending the conflict between Najib and the duo of Muhyiddin and Umno vice-president Shafie Apdal.

"When I saw Muhyiddin and Shafie standing up, it looked like there may be light at the end of the tunnel.

"As delegates, we want to put this split behind us and move forward," he said.

He noted that this also appeared to be the aspiration of the delegates over the last five days of the assembly.

"The president has said that if anyone does not respect the decision of the general assembly, then there is no place for them (in Umno)," he said.

Umno supreme council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman hailed the general assembly as a "major victory" for Najib who had faced criticism from Muhyiddin over scandals involving the RM2.6 billion donation in his personal bank account and his handling of the 1MDB affair

He noted that Muhyiddin was placed in an awkward position.

"I guess it must be awkward to be in that situation. It takes time to adapt to a new situation.

"Najib has done his part, so it is now up to him (Muhyiddin) to respond," he said.

Several Umno leaders including vice-presidents Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Hishammuddin Hussein and Sabah Umno chief Musa Aman echoed similar sentiments, declaring that the ball was now in Muhyiddin's court.
