“I’m being investigated for the same alleged comments I made regarding the Johor sultan on Twitter in 2012,” said former Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM) student activist Ahmad Shukri Kamarudin, who was released on bail from the Ayer Molek lock-up at 6pm yesterday.

The former SMM media secretary was referring to his detention in 2012 for supposedly making insulting twitter posts about the Johor sultan.

“In the five days I spent in lock-up, the police officers would meet me for four to five hours daily to facilitate the investigation.

“The questions they (the police) asked were similar to the ones asked during my detention in 2012,” added Shukri, who also mentioned he was being accused under the Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act – the same act which he was investigated under in 2012.

Shukri also told Malaysiakini that he found it peculiar that the Negri Sembilan police only visited him to record his statement on April 1 – two years after the 2014 report was made.

“My Rembau home is about five minutes away from the district’s police headquarters.

“I live near the police headquarters. So why did they wait two years before coming to record my statement?” asked Shukri.

Also, with the result of the investigation still inconclusive, Shukri said the police investigating officer would contact him soon to discuss the status of their investigation.

Power of love

Having been in the lock-up for five days, Shukri also said his greatest source of strength to strive through this dark period of his life was his wife and child.

“I’ve missed my family dearly and it’s great to be back at home with them,” he added.

Since Shukri’s latest detention, his devoted wife Sofwahtul Aufa had kept the world updated about reports regarding her husband via Facebook.

Now that he’s out on bail, what’s next on the former SMM activist’s plans?

“I hope to help out organisations like the Abolish The Sedition Act Movement (GHAH).

“I was moved by their (GHAH’s) recent candlelight vigils to support me during my detention. Now, I hope to continue their noble quest in calling for abolishment of the Sedition Act,” Shukri added.
