S'WAK POLLS PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has managed to enter Sarawak although she is on the list of banned persons.

According to PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil, Wan Azizah landed at the Sibu airport last night, where she has begun campaigning.

However, the state Immigration authorities have limited her stay until May 5, similar to DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

Wan Azizah will be spending the day on a tour of several constituencies near Sibu before returning at 6.45pm.

The opposition leader was previously on the no entry list, but Chief Minister Adenan Satem said he would reconsider the ban if she asked “politely”.

Speaking to reporters in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, Wan Azizah said she would comply with the chief minister’s requirements.

Sarawak, which has its own immigration laws, normally grants a 90-day visa for visitors from the peninsula.

However, the state reserves the right to bar entry to anybody and limit the number of days it allows visitors.

The state immigration authorities have banned a long list of opposition politicians, as well as one or two linked to Umno.

Adenan had said that those denied entry could jeopardise harmony in Sarawak, while the opposition accused the chief minister of preventing them from carrying out legitimate political activities as enshrined under the federal constitution.

However former Bersih chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan has commented the ban is illegal, as it contravenes the Immigration Act allowing entry for legitimate political activities.
