Anwar Ibrahim today said PKR is waiting for former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin to announce the formation of a new political party.

"We are waiting for his (Muhyiddin)'s announcement. If the programme or agenda is beneficial for the rakyat, we can cooperate," the jailed former opposition leader told Malaysiakini when met outside the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur.

The PKR de facto chief said this when asked for comments on former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad's plan to form a new political party and opposition coalition to further the 'Save Malaysia' agenda.

Muhyiddin, who was recently sacked from Umno, had also expressed his intention to set up a new political platform or join an existing party.

Anwar later testified as a witness in PKR vice-president Tian Chua's ongoing sedition trial.

Anwar also said PKR is open to cooperation because the opposition coalition must present a united front against BN.

"But in the situation now, it is still too early to say. We have yet to get clear explanations on the benefits to the people overall, in terms of economics, political reformation, etc," he said.

In announcing plans for the new party last week, Mahathir had said
it was necessary as existing opposition parties were "sometimes not attractive" to others.

The details so far remain sketchy as to how the group will differ from opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan.

Analysts however have said that the party should be a vehicle for more than just being an anti-Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak narrative.
