Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has claimed that he, along with his friends and family, are being 'harassed' in order to stop him from affecting the image of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

"I am being harassed at the moment. A lot of things are being done to make life very uncomfortable for me and my family and my friends.

"All kinds of things have been done in order to stop me from doing anything that may affect the image of Najib," Mahathir said at a press conference in Jakarta, Indonesia, yesterday, as reported by Singapore daily The Straits Times.

Mahathir, who had previously warned his detractors against criticising the country when abroad, was in Jakarta to give a lecture titled 'Building Economic Independence and Clean Government' to university students.

One of the things being done is that his friends and family are being visited by the Income Tax Department, he said.

He also said that the "wrongdoings of the government of the prime minister is now known to everyone, to the whole world and to Malaysians".

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has cracked down on alleged misappropriation of 1MDB funds, through the use of civil suits filed on July 20.

The DOJ claimed that more than US$3.5 billion had been diverted from 1MDB over the course of several years, to the benefit of several individuals, including an unnamed high ranking public servant dubbed 'Malaysian Official 1'.

Many people, including Mahathir, have speculated that Malaysian Official 1 refers to Najib.
