Jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's endorsement for Dr Mahathir Mohamad's new movement Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) is important, said former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz Mahathir.

"It's important to have Anwar's endorsement, especially to get commitment from PKR itself (to work with Bersatu)," Mukhriz told reporters in Puchong last night.

He said this when asked what the next step for his father, former premier Mahathir and his former deputy premier Anwar was, following their reunion at the High Court in Kuala Lumpur last Monday.

Mahathir had turned up at the court to support Anwar's filing of an injunction against the National Security Council Act.

The two shook hands and had a long discussion in their first ever meeting since Mahathir sacked Anwar as deputy prime minister in 1998.

Mukhriz said for now, their collaboration is strictly on fighting the controversial NSC Act.

"We hope it will also progress towards an official collaboration at a party to party level."

Mukhriz was speaking after attending a ceramah organised by Umno rebel group Gerakan Ketua Cawangan Malaysia (GKCM) to promote Bersatu.

When opening the ceramah, GKCM had played up the Mahathir-Anwar handshake, saying they hope the duo's partnership would be revived.

They also played a video montage of the duo when the latter were working together as prime minister and deputy.

Meanwhile on another matter, Mukhriz said Bersatu will be making preparations for possible snap polls.

He said they will have to identify potential candidates and hold seat negotiations with the opposition to ensure straight fights with BN.

"We haven't started (negotiations) yet, but in principle it looks like the opposition gets (the message).

"It looks likes they are ready to sit down and negotiate," he said.
