Bersih 5 was launched peacefully on Penang Island today, without any show from the pro-Umno red shirts.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was pleased, saying "we do not want any problem, we want to make our demands for a clean elections peacefully".

Accompanying him at the launch were Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah, Penang DAP chief Chow Kon Yeow and Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim.

During his speech at the City Hall today, Lim condemned Umno for the violence and gangsterism against Bersih rallies, especially in Selangor.

"They beat people up but do not face any action," he said to some 100 odd people who gathered at the City Hall to witness the Bersih torch being passed on to Lim.

He was referring to the latest incident where three red shirts supporters were arrested by police for assaulting a Bersih activist in Sabak Bernam. The violent incident was caught on video, which has since gone viral.

Lim also vehemently denied the allegation by Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos that DAP was involved in setting up a fake account to implicate the red shirts in planning a May 13-like incident on Bersih supporters on Nov 19.

"Worse still, these people have resorted to lies to say we are involved in setting up the fake account. Don't drag us into this, for we have nothing to do with it.

"I have told my people to lodge a police report against such allegations," added the DAP secretary-general.

Jamal, who leads the red shirts, claimed that the account and postings were fake.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said on Twitter yesterday that the remark was seditious and vowed swift action on Jamal.

During the launch, Maria passed on the Bersih torch to Lim. The torch will be taken to Parit Buntar, Perak, on Oct 14.
