Disabled activist Isaiah Jacob will embark on a “fasting and prayer” session in the lead up to the Bersih 5 rally on Nov 19.

He would commence the campaign starting midnight this Sunday at Dataran Merdeka and end it the following Saturday.

"We want to ask Almighty God to save Malaysia. We need the power of God to overcome the current situation in our country," he said, citing the various problems plaguing the nation.

"I want to save Malaysia ... We need the power of God," he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

Jacob, 50, said the campaign was to seek divine intervention to ensure the rally would proceed in a smooth manner.

He complained that action had not been taken by the authorities in relation to the threats made against Bersih 5 organisers.

Although he did not mention names, it was an obvious reference to Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunos who leads the red-shirts movement.

The latest hunger strike campaign is not the first undertaken by Jacob, who claimed that he once fasted without food for 40 days.

The activist also denied he was paid by anyone to carry out the campaign.

“This is my own effort (because) I love this country and all Malaysians. I did not receive a single sen from any quarters,” he added.

Jacob however welcomed assistance in terms of chairs, a place for him to sleep as well as a mobile toilet.

“I don’t want any form of cash,” he stressed.

For the campaign, he explained that one specific prayer would be recited daily.

The first day, for example, would be a prayer for the Bersih rally to take place smoothly while the second day would be to pray for the well-being of Bersih organisers and their families.

He also welcomed all mosques and other places of worship to offer special prayers during the period.

“If I, as a disabled person can come out and do something for the country, every Malaysian should also do the same," he added.

Jacob also does not think that he would face opposition to his campaign.

“Even if they come, I leave it to Almighty God. The disabled are special in the eyes of God, if anybody tries to touch them, God will protect them.

"I will carry on my duty without any doubts. I'm a brave man, physically disabled, but my mind is strong," he added.
