Malaysia should emulate China in aggressively going after fugitives who are being investigated for economic or corruption offences, so that they can be brought back home to face justice, said DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.

"Maybe, Malaysia should emulate China and have an Operation Fox-Hunt and Sky-Net to bring economic or corruption fugitives like Jho Low and others involved in the 1MDB and SRC International scandals back to justice in Malaysia.

"Will the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the Attorney-General’s Chambers work on this possibility?" asked Lim in a statement today.

He was referring to the operations ran by China codenamed Fox-Hunt and Sky-Net to seek out and bring back corrupt officials who fled the country and are living overseas.

This is part of President Xi Jinping's anti-graft policy which had led to a purge that extends even into China's corridors of power, with not even high-ranking government and communist party officials spared from the dragnet. Though some worry if it is being used to persecute political rivals.

The initial Fox-Hunt and present Sky-Net operations which extends to anti-graft purge overseas, saw China sending agents abroad to persuade those they can find to come back home, offering reduced sentences and the chance to clear their name via fresh investigations.

China had also negotiated with various countries like the US and UK for an extradition treaty or agreement to allow repatriation on a case by case basis, to facilitate going after less willing targets, as well as activating extradition treaties it already has with countries like France.

The Middle Kingdom has successfully repatriated corruption suspects from countries like Indonesia, US, Italy and Australia in its international anti-graft dragnet and continues to aggressively pursue those still in hiding abroad.

Like China, Malaysia's probe into several ongoing corruption investigations were hampered by witnesses and suspects who have gone overseas.

Most notably as Lim pointed out, being Jho Low and several others involved in the 1MDB and SRC International investigations.

To date, authorities said they have been unable to locate the witnesses and suspects, though critics accuse the authorities of dragging their feet or not really looking hard enough.
