Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president Muhyiddin Yassin has emphasised the need for Pakatan Harapan to resolve its leadership issue as soon as possible.

He said this in response to a question on Harapan's vague position on who would be the coalition's prime minister and deputy prime minister candidates.

"Harapan leaders recognise the perception that we need to be more cohesive.

"The coalition allows us to discuss issues like leadership and seat allocation freely and frankly.

“The sooner we resolve this, the better it would be for Harapan," he told a press conference at the Bersatu headquarters in Petaling Jaya this afternoon.

He said Bersatu will not impose a deadline for naming the coalition's nominees for the top two jobs.

On the allocation of seats, Muhyiddin said Bersatu had informed their allies about their intended role, which was to reach a wider Malay audience.

"We understand there are some current overlaps in terms of seats (we want)... but the most important thing is 'winnability' - the party that can draw the most support and win should be given fair consideration," he said.

Will focus on peninsula first

Muhiyiddin added that Bersatu would not be setting up offices in Sabah or Sarawak as it would focus its efforts on constituencies in Peninsula Malaysia.

"Even though our (Bersatu) constitution involves Sabah and Sarawak, for now we have decided to not operate in Sabah and Sarawak to give us more time to contest in Peninsula Malaysia. It is a pragmatic decision for now," the Bersatu president said.

Muhyiddin, who earlier chaired the Bersatu supreme council meeting, also unveiled the chairpersons and deputy chairpersons for the Bersatu leadership in Kedah, Kelantan, Penang, Terengganu, Perak, Selangor, Malacca, Johor and Pahang.

He said the leadership for Negeri Sembilan, Federal Territories and Perlis would be announced at a later date.

The current list of state Bersatu heads and their deputy are as follows:
