MCA Kapar Youth chief Soong Kee Chai has announced that he will contest the Youth chief's post at central level during the elections next month.

The contest is expected to see a three-cornered fight between Soong, Youth joint secretary-general Liong Tiong Lai and Ling's son, Hee Leong.

However, Hee Leong, who heads the MCA Kuala Kangsar Youth division, has yet to make an official announcement.

Contacted today, Soong, who has held his current post for two terms, said his decision should not come as a surprise.

He said it is the right of every delegate to contest for the post which is being vacated by incumbent Ong Tee Keat, who is now running for vice-presidency.

"Elections are (part of ) a democratic process and I should not be seen as a troublemaker...I am not," he said.

The businessman-cum-politician said he decided to contest based on the support from his division.

When quizzed about his chances, he said it was up to the central delegates. Although he does not hold a post at the central level, Soong does not see himself as an underdog.

'Don't intervene'

He also urged central leaders not to intervene in the wing's elections but, when asked to elaborate, would only say: "I have my reasons".

On the possibility of Hee Leong joining the race, Soong said he will respect anybody's decision to contest.

Similarly, Liow also said he respected Soong's decision to contest the post.

"MCA Youth is the most democratic body and any party member can contest any post. I am fully prepared for the election and will let the party members make a decision," he said when contacted.

The Youth wing's election will be held on Aug 19, simultaneously with the Women wing's election. Contests for posts in the top echelon of the party will be held the following day.
