The Dang Wangi police today denied it had claimed that a 61-year-old woman had lied about being stripped and humiliated while under police detention.

In a report today, Malay daily Utusan Malaysia quoted Dang Wangi deputy district police chief Mohd Rodzi Islmail as saying that Cheng Pik Wai had trumped up the charges to blame the police.

However, Rodzi told malaysiakini that he was misquoted.

He said investigations into the case have been completed and the report was submitted to the Public Prosecutor's Office this afternoon.

"Any further action depends solely on the public prosecutor," he added when contacted.

Cheng, who was accused of shoplifting in a shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur on March 11, claimed that she was forced strip during her three-hour detention.

The mother of three also told a press conference, organised by an opposition MP, that she was humiliated by two policewomen and had lost RM200.

The Taiwanese national who is married to a Malaysian claimed that a policewoman had also openly asked for bribe.

Cheng, who was not charged for shoplifting, lodged a police report on March 29 against the police personnel involved.

On Thursday, she claimed that the police had asked her irrelevant and embarrassing questions when recording her statement on the incident.

Among the questions was wether all her children had the same father.

Meanwhile, her lawyer Sankara Nair responding to the Utusan report said the police should file a counter police report if they believed that Cheng's accusations were fabricated.

"The police cannot play the role of arbitrator. Instead, they should consider the evidence," he added when contacted.
