While there is a sense of relieve that the protracted court battle has drawn to an end. There is still much resentment and questions about the death of G Francis Udayappan. Below are some of the quotes.

Francis' mother, G Sara Lily: For two years I have suffered. Nobody but God knows my sadness.

I want to know what happened to my son. He was healthy, but is now dead. I don't believe what was said (in the courtroom). I believe he was beaten.

Lawyer N Surendran: This is a massive failure on the part of the Royal Malaysian Police, a massive failure of investigation, a massive failure of a sense of purpose, and massive lack of sympathy for the suffering mother on the part of the Royal Malaysian Police.

It's also a failure of the higher authorities, and the Attorney-General's office, every one of whom delayed the case at every possible stage. While she's happy that she's gotten the body, it is extremely sad that in this country, it has taken two years for a mother to bury her son.

They took a healthy... young man and caused a two-year delay before the body is returned to the mother. They are returning him as a collection of bones and flesh. This is an absolute indictment of the police force. It is a black day for the police.

The family disagrees with the findings of the court (that there was no foul play) and the family realises that much of the evidence was found and presented by the police to the court. There is a serious flaw in the system. We are considering all our options.

Police Watch and Human Rights Committee coordinator B Chandran: Those responsible for the delay must be held accountable.

Whether there was foul play or not, they have to be responsible for the delay and the mess they've created in the whole investigation.

They have to be responsible. They cannot run away from that responsibility.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice-president R Sivarasa: The court had completely whitewashed the police by ruling out the element of foul play in the course of Francis death.

(There are) too many suspicious circumstances about how this boy was arrested and the facts surrounding the arrest and the death in the river.

(Stressing on the need for the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission of IPCMC) The police cannot investigate when there is a wrongdoing alleged on themselves. They cannot, and when they investigate and present evidence to the court, this is what happens.

This is why this country needs an IPCMC. We need it desperately, so that the true facts about cases such as this can come out.

If this goes on, we're going to have more and more injustices like this happening. Today we have the situation where the police themselves are objecting to the setting up of the commission after the (prime minister) says he wants it and it's the police who are telling the PM what he can have and what he cannot have.

It also raises the question as to who is really running the country.

PKR youth vice-chief Manikavasagam: Special prayers will be conducted for Francis on Sunday in front of the Brickfields police station (from where he was said to have escaped).

This will be a peaceful assembly. We ask the police to cooperate with us. (If the police decide to take action) We are not afraid of arrest.
