An outspoken deputy minister has called for the sacking of a female History teacher who allegedly hurled racial slurs and other abuses at her Indian students.

“The teacher must be reprimanded, given a warning or even sacked, to send a message that this behaviour is not tolerable,” said Devamany, deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.

devamany 261107 Devamany said this when met after he attended the MIC central working committee meeting at the party’s headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

The teacher from SMK Telok Panglima Garang in Kuala Langat had allegedly uttered racial slurs and derogatory remarks at several Indian students.

The matter came to public attention after two students filed a police report on Aug 1.

Devamany said the Education Ministry must take a serious stance on the matter in order to ensure that public confidence in the education system does not erode.

“The detrimental remark and racist slur is something unbecoming of a teacher but it is happening in a number of places.

“I urge the Education Ministry to send a strong message to irresponsible teachers because the teachers send their children to teachers with respect and belief that they would be taken care of,” he added.

Memo to Hisham soon

In another development, MIC Youth said it would submit a memorandum to Education Minister Hishamuddin Hussein soon in protest against the lenient ‘punishment’ meted to the teacher involved.

t mohan “MIC Youth will send the memorandum urging the Education Ministry to take appropriate action and not send the teacher to a better school which has been seen as a form of promotion,”its leader T Mohan told a press conference today.

The teacher was allegedly transferred to a ‘smart school’ nearer to her home following public outcry over the incident. Ministry officials said the transfer was for her safety.

Mohan said that the Education Ministry appeared to be taking the matter lightly and the movement was not satisfied with progress of the probe.

“The ministry has to act sternly and swiftly in order to cool down the angry responses from the Indian community,” he added.
