Bukit Aman commercial crime division director Koh Hong Sun today clarified that police had recently spoken to MIC president S Samy Vellu on allegations of criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving certain people in MIC's education arm Maju Institute of Education Development (MIED), and nothing else.

mic and mied education scandal In clarifying an earlier Bernama report today, he said that police investigations had centred on the alleged CBT and they were not looking into alleged construction cost over-runs involving MIED's Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology (Aimst).

Koh said investigations into the alleged CBT were still ongoing.

Meanwhile, Samy Vellu told Bernama that he recently met the police over alleged misappropriation of funds in MIED.

This followed reports to the police by MIC, he said.

Samy said he had given the fullest cooperation to the police on MIED's activities and the financial irregularities that had been uncovered.

He said his recent meeting with the police did not touch on other matters.

'Documents seized'

samy vellu and mic Earlier, Bernama had reported that police had quizzed Samy Vellu for about five hours on Wednesday at the party headquarters over "allegations of financial improprieties."

Quoting sources, the state-run news agency added that the police seized several documents from MIED and Aimst.

"The Bukit Aman commercial crime division director is directly monitoring investigations. This is a big case. We might also question several other MIC leaders.

"Once investigations are completed, we will talk to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) if there is a need for further action.

"The MACC is also monitoring the case and if we need their assistance, we will ask them to move in... only if the need arises," a senior police officer in the probe told Bernama .

According to Bernama , the police are probing the construction and maintenance of Aimst as costs ballooned from RM500 million to RM230 million.

Aimst is located in Semeling, Kedah and began operations 18 months ago. The university was the brainchild of Samy Vellu and was funded by donations from MIC branches throughout the country.

Thus far, it has been confirmed that police have taken statements former MIED Capital Sdn Bhd chief M Mahalingam, who was sacked suddenly as MIC treasurer-general in December last year.

"Yes, I spoke to the police. It was for about four hours, a few days ago. I explained some matters that were referred to me. I can only tell them what I know," he said.
