'Critics of the government and human rights defenders are being stifled with multiple criminal charges.'

Amnesty International is gravely concerned with the decision of the Federal Court on Oct 10, which ordered seven human rights activists and parliamentarians from an opposition party to face trial for participating in peaceful protests in 2015. The decision, which has happened in response to a constitutional challenge of several provisions of the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012, highlights the ongoing pattern of repression against government critics in the country.

The Malaysian authorities must immediately and unconditionally drop all charges that have been brought against N Surendran, a lawyer and opposition lawmaker, solely for criticising a court verdict in 2014 concerning his client, the de facto opposition leader and prisoner of conscience, Anwar Ibrahim.

Hundreds of refugees who survived the 2015 boat crisis in South-East Asia have been locked up in poor conditions in Malaysia ever since, Amnesty International said, following a visit to the country to investigate the fate of people one year on.

The Singapore authorities should immediately halt the execution of Kho Jabing, a Malaysian national convicted of murder, Amnesty International said today.

Amnesty International urges the president of Singapore to immediately grant clemency to Kho Jabing and halt any plans to carry out his execution, currently scheduled for May 20. Executing him would be a regressive step and does not work as a deterrent to crime. The organisation also urges the government of Singapore to re-establish a moratorium on executions and commute all death sentences as first steps towards abolition of the death penalty in the country.
