I refer to the letter Malaysia finally warms up to Israel .

Our government seems to be siding with the Sri Lankan government ( a close ally of Israel) in carrying out its 'final solution' to its LTTE problem at a time when the world is busy with the nuclear threat of North Korea, the swine fever, the Obama effect etc.

We all know that throughout history, policies of any government have never been consistent except perhaps for the policies of the Orthodox Christian countries of Russia, Serbia, Romania, Greece and Cyprus because the commonality of religion there tends to dictate their foreign policies.

Look at the policies of the American governments; they are not only dictated by a Republican or a Democrat president but also by the personal beliefs of the individual president himself. For instance, look at John Kennedy and Jimmy Carter, both Democrats.

If Kennedy made his foreign policies purely based on what is good for America, Jimmy Carter, being a passionate Christian and a humanist, was more concerned with the welfare of the whole human race (for which he failed to get his second term because the average American hated him).

As for the British government, pragmatism is the essence of its foreign policy. While it can talk a lot about democracy, Her Majesty's government will have no qualms about defending the rights of the absolute monarchs or dictators or military junta as long as they are loyal customers of the British aerospace industry.

In so far as our government policy with regards to the Sri Lankan conflict, I wish to know whether Wisma Putra has done enough research about Israel supplying arms and weapons to Sri Lanka as alleged by the writer.

If that is so, then it was quite unwise for the Najib administration to be seen openly backing the Sri Lankan government.

This is the problem of an Islamic country like Malaysia. If our policies on Muslim minorities in the Philippines, Thailand or Singapore have to be different, it has to be all the more so with regard to Israel, Israeli Muslims and the Palestinians.

While our government clearly supported the (Muslim) Bosnians as well the (Catholic) Croats during the Yugoslavian civil war, the Australian government, too, had to tread carefully because there are substantial number of Serbs and Croats there (Down Under).

If the Sri Lankan Tamils (the Jaffnese) and the South Indian Tamils in Malaysia are angry with the policy of the Malaysian government, they should also bear in mind that the Sri Lankan Malays and the Sri Lankan Muslims have also suffered from the this long war.

They too were considered as enemies by the LTTE simply because they did not want to get involved.
