A higher GDP (Gross Domestic Product) does not mean better living standard. A fairer and equal distribution of the nation’s wealth amongst its people is more meaningful than GDP.

The Gini coefficient index can range from 0 to 1, or 0% to 100%. A low Gini coefficient indicates a more equal distribution, while a higher Gini coefficient indicates more unequal distribution.

The shocking fact is Malaysia has the second worst Gini index in Asia (0.492 or 49.2%). In plain language, Malaysia is second worst (after Papua New Guinea) in terms of income inequality in Asia. The nation’s wealth is highly concentrated among a small group of very rich people.

Prime Minister Najib Razak shall make the Gini index as the top priority in our economic development plan. The rakyat expect a fairer distribution of the nation’s wealth irrespective of race in order to achieve a truly 1Malaysia.

The goal shall be getting Malaysia to be in the top 10 Gini index ranking in Asia in the next five years.
