The Milgram Experiment - the M'sian version

We are seeing many figures both from within and, purportedly, without the government attempting to play the role of the messiah of a certain race. They say that their people are divided, oppressed and only they are capable enough to protect them.

Unfortunately, this message appears to be catching on and being accepted readily, on the surface at least. However, how many truly accept this message and understand the reasoning behind the arguments?

Recently, a game show called Le jeu de la mort (The Game of Death) was broadcast in France. Participants were asked to hit a button that would dole out an electric shock to an unseen individual each time he answered a question incorrectly. Beginning from 80 volts, each wrong answer would result in the gradual increase in the voltage to a maximum of 460 volts, potent enough to kill.

The individual being electrocuted screamed in agony and begged the participants to stop. Pressured by the hostess and the audience, 64 out of the 80 participants continued punishing the individual, even after he fell silent possibly due to loss of consciousness or perhaps even death.

What the participants were unaware of was that the individual at the receiving end was an actor and the game show, an experiment.

If this electro shock experiment seems vaguely familiar, it is probably because you have seen it before in movies and television. Known as the Milgram experiment, it was designed to study the degree to which people would blindly obey an authority figure without question. It came about in the 1960s' in an attempt to understand how seemingly rational people could commit the atrocities that was the Holocaust. Were they just following orders or did they truly believe in the need for their actions. This game show was a variation of this experiment.

There has always been a degree of controversy in regards to these experiments and this was no different. Whether or not you agree with the methodology in which these experiments were conducted, you have to sit up and take notice of the results. A staggering 80% of participants carried on all the way through, although they appeared visibly shaken and uncomfortable.

Although this experiment was in France, the results have been relatively consistent wherever the experiment was carried out. As such, it should hardly be surprising to find Malaysia in the state that it is in today where race and religion is concerned.

Since anyone who begs to differ, the liberals as they are known, are labeled traitors to their race and religion, there is arguably an overwhelming pressure to conform. Throw in intimidating and obnoxious figures, mere conformity melts into obedience.
