I refer to the Star 's report that Amber Chia's baby is going to be the promoter of a milk bottle company. This is most discouraging consider that Amber Chia is a well-known celebrity and role model to many Malaysians. Her conduct is certainly influential to Malaysian ladies and young working mums in particular.
Malaysia is one of the countries which promotes WHO's initiative of baby-friendly hospitals. In fact all our public hospitals are certified baby-friendly and our Health Ministry has put in a lot of effort to promote and maintain such a status.
Babies should be given exclusively breast milk which is the best food that can be offered naturally by the mother for their first six months of life. The benefit of breast-feeding have been widely published and should not be disputed.
The above report, however, is perhaps implying that breast-feeding to not good enough for Amber Chia's baby.
Amber Chia's move to let her baby to be a ‘milk bottle model’ when he turns three months old is certainly not conforming and maybe most damaging to our government's effort to promote breast-feeding.
The picture in the paper where Amber feeds her baby with a bottle is sending a wrong massage to all the mothers and would-be mothers that breast-feeding is second best to bottle feed.
Considering that she gave birth in a private hospital, perhaps that private hospital did not provide her with the necessary education regarding breast-feeding and she appears to choose bottle- feeding over breast-feeding.
